1 Law:: uti possidetis (Lat) /yuwtay p(sidiyt(s/ (Int. Law) : a phrase used to signify that the parties to a treaty are to retain possession of what they have acquired by force during the war. A treaty which terminates a war may adopt this principle or that of the status quo ante bellum, or a combination of the two. In default of any treaty stipulation, the former doctrine prevails.
