Semantically, and usage-wise, the main distinction between them is that معنا is additionally charged with an extended sense beyond merely definitional elements in which aspect معني is less conspicuously so. For example, in such sentences as زندگي او اصلاً برايش معنايي ندارد (His life has absolutely no meaning for him) or لبخندش خيلي معنا داشت (His smile had obvious implications. He smiled meaningfully. His smile was full of meaning) معنا is used in a somewhat extended sense in which contexts it functions slightly better and is more prevalent than معني which see below.
