The lead in fuel antiknock agents and the phosphorus in oil additives are the most important poisons.
Though lead antiknock agents are not added to the gasoline used with catalyst-equipped vehicles, this "unleaded" fuel can be contaminated with small amounts (~10mg Pb/dm3) from the fuel distribution system.
The presence or absence of knock in an engine depends primarily on the antiknock quality of the fuel, which is defined by the fuel's octane number (see Sec. 9.6.3).
