In the last few years, the biopharmaceutical industries have been focusing their efforts on developing delivery systems for biomolecules, which can release different biopharmaceutical agents locally and in a sustained manner, at the same time as pro- tecting them from degradation before reaching their target.
These drug delivery systems should be made of a biocompatible carrier that allows high loading of biomolecules without any premature release of the cargo before reaching the target site, that is, zero premature release.
The high pore volume permits the confinement of a large amount of a vari- ety of pharmaceutical agents or biomolecules.
