Most Christian art in the early centuries survives in the catacombs, buried beneath the city of Rome and other places scattered throughout the Empire.
Catacomb paintings, like the ones at Priscilla (Figure 7.1) from the fourth century, show a sensitivity toward artistic programs rather than random images.
