The likelihood of occurrence of a cardiac event can be esti- mated using a scale based on the presence of certain risk fac- tors: history of previous cardiac event; a baseline New York Heart Association (NYHA) class greater than II rating or cya- nosis; left heart obstruction (mitral valve area ≤ 2 cm2, aortic valve area 30 mm Hg by echocardiography); and reduced sys- temic ventricular systolic function (ejection fraction < 40%).
Parturient patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy will likely require invasive monitoring, including intraarterial catheterization and pulmonary artery catheterization and/ or echocardiography to assess the patient's hemodynamic status and guide intrapartum management.
Arterial blood gas analysis to assess for carbon dioxide retention, electrocardiography, and echocardiography may be indicated.
