The four major bones that make up the human leg are the femur (thigh bone) at the top of the leg, the tibia (shinbone) and fibula (rear calf bone) in the bottom of the leg and the patella in front of the knee joint (kneecap).
The femur is the longest and strongest bone in the human body, with the head of the femur articulating with the acetabulum of the pelvic bone.
The base of the femur forms the knee, the largest joint in the human body, through two different articulations - one between the femur and tibia and one between the femur and patella.
In the foot, these strap-like muscles extend from the femur, tibia, and fibula and attach to the metatarsals, phalanges, and calcaneus.
The gastrocnemius has two heads that both originate on the base of the femur, directly above the knee; and the soleus, having one head, originating from the proximal dorsal parts of the tibia and fibula.
