Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is a small-vessel vasculitis characterized by purpura, arthritis, abdominal pain, and hematuria.
There are four main features of HSP: palpable purpura ranging in size from 2 to 10 mm primarily involving the buttocks, thighs, legs, and arms; gastrointestinal symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain; polyarthralgias; and hematuria and proteinuria.
HSP is typically self- limited and requires no treatment and no laboratory evaluation other than urinalysis (and renal function tests in the presence of hematuria).
Baseline microscopic hematuria may
glomerular injury and is characterized by hematuria and proteinuria.
