Family based risk factors for non suicidal self injury : considering influence of maltreatment, adverse family life experiences, and parent child relational risk The current investigation addressed the potential for unique influences of perceived childhood maltreatment, adverse family-life events, and parent-child relational trauma on the lifetime occurrence and addictive features of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Perceived parent-child relational trauma was uniquely linked with NSSI behavior after accounting for perceived childhood maltreatment; adverse family-life events had an additional unique association. In contrast, perceived paternal maltreatment was uniquely related with NSSI's addictive features. Family-based risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury: influences of maltreatment, adverse family-life events, and parent-child relational trauma،This is particularly true of children who have experienced the extreme stress of maltreatment, such as abuse or neglect, by parents or caregivers (see "The Special Case of Abuse and Neglect"). For example, child maltreatment is associated with other family-level risk factors, such as poor parenting skills and parental substance abuse and mental illness (National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, 2009); ongoing maltreatment also results in developmental delays, which can compound a child's risk for later behavioral and emotional problems. For example, in the Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care Program for Preschoolers (MTFC-P), maltreated foster children receive individualized services in the home, a preschool setting, and a therapeutic child play group; and foster parents are given training to ensure that they are properly equipped to care for children who may come to them with symptoms of severe stress and unusually difficult behavior challenges. Findings: Findings on this program have confirmed that the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) intervention produces a broad array of positive effects on immediate and intermediate outcomes, including improved maternal, infant, and child health and reduced injuries, neglect, and maltreatment of children.
