The brain stem contains three parts - the midbrain, pons and medulla (Fig. 1). There are three main connections between the cerebellum and the brain stem-the superior, middle and inferior cerebellar peduncles, which connect with the midbrain, pons, and medulla, respectively. This occurs gradually (elongated nuclei in medulla, rounder in pons and midbrain), b) The sensory nucleus of CN5 does not break up but is continuous from spinal cord through midbrain, c) The motor nucleus of CN5 is confined to the pons, d) There are three sensory nuclei in the brain stem - the vestibulocochlear complex (CN8), sensory nucleus of CN5, and nucleus solitarius. e) Solitarius is a visceral sensory nucleus (CNs 7, 9, 10). 0 The sensory nucleus of CN5 is somatic sensory (CNs 5, 7, 9, 10 and possibly others - but the predominant input is from CN5). g) aMbiguus is Motor (CNs 9, 10) h) Nucleus solitarius is solitarily confined to the medulla as are nucleus ambiguus, the nucleus of CN12, the dorsal motor nucleus of CN10 and the salivatory nuclei, i) Nuc. 8 overlaps the medulla and pons. The 12 cranial nerves and their nuclei are apportioned equally between the 3 brain stem segments (CNs 1, 2, 3, 4 in midbrain; CNs 5, 6, 7, 8 in pons; CNs 9, 10,11, 12 in medulla). Also, although all divisions of CN5 enter the pons, the sensory nucleus of CN5 extends from midbrain to spinal cord (fig. 27); the nuclei of CN8 lie not only in the pons but also in the medulla (fig. 21); the nuclei and nerve entry points of CN7 are located in both pons and medulla (fig. 28).،
