megacities (cities with populations of more than 10 million people) across the globe.
Figure 16-1 shows megacity locations on a world map; as you can see, nearly half are located somewhere in Asia, including Tokyo (Japan), Manila (Philippines), and Karachi (Pakistan).

Planning for the megacities of the future will require balancing rapid population growth with efforts to pre- vent harmful environmental impacts and providing adequate resources for billions of new city dwellers.
