Genes that are expressed in differentiated tissues (such as the mrf4 and my/5 genes expressed in muscle cells) are down regulated, while there is a dramatic increase in the expression of genes such as msxl that are associated with the proliferating progress zone mesenchyme of the embryonic limb (Simon et al. 1995).
The letter A marks the apical mesenchyme of the blastema, and U and R are the precartiiaginous condensations that will form the ulna and radius, respectively.
Both sensory and motor axons innervate the blastema such that sensory axons make direct contact with the AEC and motor axons terminate in the blastema mesenchyme (see Figure 22.17B).
The regenerated fin can be divided into four basic sections (FIGURE 22.23): (1) the distal blastema made up of nonproliferative fibroblasts, (2) the proliferative proximal blastema that constitutes the major portion of the dedifferentiated mesenchyme, (3) the differentiating proximal blastema that functions to add differentiated cells to existing and newly formed tissues during outgrowth, and (4) the lateral-encompassing epidermal layer$ that serve as complex signaling centers throughout regeneration.
Here, the secondary mesenchyme cells form the right and left coelomic pouches (see Figure 10.10,13.5 hours).
