Thus mesoporous bioceramics are implantable materials that can be employed for controlled release of biologically active molecules, thanks to their mesostructure with pores ranging between 2 and 50 nm.
Ordered mesoporous ceramics are unique materials characterized by an ordered mesostructure of porous and disordered arrangement at the atomic level.
Japanese academic investigators (Yanagisawa et al. 1990) and Mobil Oil Corporation researchers (Kresge et al. 1992) started to employ surfactants as structure-directing agents to produce new types of material, KSW-n and M41S families of mesostructured materials, respectively.
At this point of the process, the ceramic precursors are added to the liquid crystals, and the sol-gel process takes place through hydrolysis and conden- sation to yield the ceramics condensed around that supramicellar mesostructure.
Thus it has been possible to combine the traditional composi- tion of glasses with the more modern supramolecular chemistry of surfactants to produce templated glasses, which combine the benefits of bioactive glasses composition together with a mesostructure that offers many possibilities within the biomedical research field.
