In extreme cases, marginalised groups might resist the activities of multinational corporations (MNCs) in their countries.
The level of reaction by local communities points to the level of disregard and mistreatment by the MNCs operating in the Global South.
In such a situation, the state relies on taxes, royalties, and equity stakes in resource-based MNCs in their territories and this increases dependence on FDI for countries in the Global South and affords the MNCs a disproportionate amount of power in these countries (Omeje, 2007, p. 5).
MNCs are ultimately acting in the interests of their holding entities to whom the consequences of their actions in the host country are less relevant than return on investment.
