Reflecting on some of the major development thinking as a response to political-economic events at the time, and critiquing some of the early schools of development theory, notably modernisation theory, dependency theory, and world systems theory, the chapter also highlights the tensions between endogenous and exogenous explanations for under- development.
The rise of theories such as dependency theory and world systems theory (discussed below) was highly influential in advancing a more nuanced understanding, while development theories such as the so-called modernisation theory seemed to draw heavily from this early thinking (as was the case with Rostow's model).
