There are three kinds of items: gems, weapons, and spellbooks.
You can equip up to three spellbooks at a time; each spellbook enables you to cast a spell while equipped.
Should you display the effects of equipped spellbooks all the time on the subscreen or only at certain times (for example, when they're highlighted, or when the mouse is hovering over them)?
Then create the interactive parts that can be manipulated: the ability to level up, drop items, and equip/unequip weapons and spellbooks.
