استوپا
The principal place of early Buddhist worship is the stupa, a mound-shaped shrine that has no interior.
A stupa is a reliquary; worshippers gain spiritual merit through being in close proximity to its contents.
■ Six hundred donors have inscriptions carved into the stupa, revealing that the project was funded by women as well as men, common people as well as monks
■ This massive Buddhist monument contains 504 life-size Buddhas, 1,460 narrative relief sculptures on 1,300 panels 8,200 feet long, 1,500 stupas, and 1 million carved blocks of stone
■ On top, an enclosed stupa
