Etiology and IDD Subtypes
The previous DSM criteria provided a reliable system of identification of PDD, especially for children who were 3 years of age or older; however, identification of the subtypes within PDD (autistic disorder, AS, childhood disintegrative disorder and PDD NOS) continued to pose a challenge to clinicians (Miller & Ozonoff, 1997; Szatmari, Archer, Fisman, Streiner & Wilson, 1995).
As a result, the current DSM (APA, 2013) abandoned the category of PDD containing five different subtypes in favor of one category that would view all the sim- ilar disorders as variants of autism on the same spectrum, autism spectrum disorders.
Tsai and Ghaziuddin (2014) examined the decision to merge subtypes of PDD into the clas- sification of ASD based on the assumption that subtypes cannot be reliably differentiated from one another.
Based on these findings Tsai and Ghaziuddin (2014) state that despite changes made in the criteria by the DSM-5 "future research and clinical practice will continue to find ways to meaningfully subtype the ASD" (p. 321).
