These five bones, along with the talus and calcaneus form the tarsus - a cluster of seven articulating bones within the foot.
The hindfoot is comprised of the of the ankle bone (talus) and heel bone (calcaneus).
The tibia and fibula of the lower leg are connected to the top of the talus to form the ankle joint.
The calcaneus is the largest, weight bearing bone in the foot and connected to the talus at the subtalar joint and is cushioned underneath by a layer of fat.
The talus, one of the bones forming the tarsus, forms the lower part of the ankle joint through its articulations with the lateral and medial malleoli of the tibia and fibula of the lower leg.
