Comparing the transcriptomes of anterior-facing blastema cells from regeneration-competent species with regeneration-deficient species revealed an upregulation of genes indicative of highly active Wnt/p- catenin signaling only in the blastemas of regeneration-deficient planaria (Sikes and Newmark 2013).
Notum is upregulated in the anterior-facing blastema
(A) Expression of nAG protein (green) is localized to a small subset of epidermal cells in the normal and denervated limbs during development but is highly upregulated throughout the epidermis of aneurogenic limbs.
In normal limb regeneration, nAG is upregulated only in the shealth cells of regenerating nerves (N); the inset is a low magnification view of neurofilments (red) in same image.
In the regenerating aneurogenic limb, nAG is upregulated throughout the limb blastema.
