We assessed activity of the M. zygomaticus major (the so-called smiling muscle) to capture facets of positive emotional response and the M. corrugator supercilii (frowning) to capture negative response (Cacioppo et al. 1986; Lang et al. 1993). fEMG has been used in past empathy research.
We measured subjective aesthetic experience through evaluations (liking, interest, valence, and moving ratings) and psychophysio- logical variables (fEMG over the M. corrugator supercilii and M. zygomaticus major, as well as SCR).
Figure 1 (M. corrugator supercilii) and Fig. 2 (M. zygomaticus major) show the fEMG activations separately for conditions and representational and abstract art.

The fEMG results are shown in Fig. 1 (M. corrugator supercilii) and Fig. 2 (M. zygomaticus major) for both abstract and representational paintings.
