name of a fortress in the Republic of Daghestan at which Muslim warriors Qazi Mulla Mohammad (killed in AH 1248) and later Sheikh Shamel (born in AH 1212) led a brave military resistance against the invading troops of czarist Russia in the early nineteenth century and thereby slowed down the incursions into Persia of the Russian troops. The fortress eventually fell to the czarist Russian troops and toward the end of a crucial fierce battle with them the Muslim women on the fortress jumped down into the deep valley from the top of the fortress killing themselves to save themselves the dishonor of falling into the hands of the Russian troops. It is said that upon their arrival on the scene the czarist troops of Russia were moved to tears.
