استضعاف

es-tez-‘âf

english

1 Law:: (since February 1979) Arab. Originally a Qoranic term that appears in the Holy Qoran in its various derivational forms and meanings and with a part-of-speech spectrum including a score of nouns, adjectives, gerunds, and verbs transitive and intransitive. In the form shown, as well as in its noun and adjective form (مستضعف) it is a politically-charged word that has, since the culmination of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (February 1979), been widely used in the official religio-political rhetoric on the media in condemnation of the oppressive and tyrannical rule of the Pahlavi Dynasty (Reza Shah and his son Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi) in Iran, and less markedly of the foreign policy of the United States in its dealing with the third world nations. Its root form ضَعُفَ in Arabic means make or become weak; fail; languish; droop; flag; slacken; lose power or strength; decline in force or power; be or become weak, feeble, debilitated, frail; waste away; pine away. Its noun abstract form ضَعف means weakness, feebleness, frailty, debility, asthenia, delicacy; languor; powerlessness; impuissance, impotence. Its adjective form ضعيف means weak; feeble; frail; delicate; weakly; debilitated; asthenic; flagging; languid; enervated; powerless; impotent. استضعاف carries all the core meanings of its noun form and denotes systematic disempowerment of and tyranny over the potentially strong segment of a nation entailing their poverty and oppression as a means for anticipatory suppression of their revolt against the ruling political system.
