• arbitrator : A neutral person chosen to resolve disputes between parties, esp by means of formal arbitration • arbiter : Anyone with the power to decide disputes, such as a judge • referee : In the U.S., a person to whom cause pending in a court is referred by the court, to take testimony, hear the parties, and report thereon to the court. Person who is appointed by court to exercise certain judicial powers, to take testimony, to hear parties, and report his findings. He is an officer exercising judicial powers, and is an arm of the court for a specific purpose. Similar functions in the U.S. courts are performed by auditors, assessors or masters. In the Iranian courts these duties are performed partly by a puisne judge and in part by licensed professionals (designated كارشناس ) in the special fields upon the commission of the court • intermediary : An arbitrator or mediator (in this sense in Persian واسطه and ميانجي). In its more general sense an intermediary is a ‘mediator’ or a ‘go-between’ and in not therefore synonymous with ‘arbitrator’ or ‘arbiter’. • judge : In its strict sense a judge is a presiding officer of a court. In its more general sense it denotes ‘one who gives an authoritative opinion’, and in Persian in this latter sense is more commonly a كارشناس or خبره in connection with a professional question or judgment
