2 Law:: blood money • weregild, or wergild : In Britain this was the price of homicide, or other atrocious personal offense, paid partly to the king for the loss of a subject, partly to the lord for the loss of a vassal, and partly to the next of kin of the injured person. In the Anglo-Saxon laws, the amount of compensation varied with the degree or rank of the party slain. The practice existed among pagan Arabs and was endorsed in Islam. In the canon law of Islam blood money must be paid to the next of kin of the person injured or killed. In this case Islam permits the next of kin to demand lex talionis or opt for blood money at his or her discretion
