the state-issued ID card common in Iran. It is a small booklet in 6 pages, now about 10 x 13.50 centimeters printed and distributed to local Civil and Personal Status Registration Departments by the Ministry of the Interior with a passport-size picture of holder that includes a hand-written number and a printed serial number in read, his/her full name, his/her birth date, his/her birth place, first name of his/her parents and their ID card particulars, columns for marriage(s), divorce(s), or Death of Spouse, 12 rows for names and ID card particulars of children of the marriage, Remarks Column, and a box for entry of death, plus a loose-leaf printed sheet with 24 blank boxes for the imprint of special (government or polling) seals on special occasions. N.B. شناسنامه has long since been erroneously translated into English as ‘birth certificate’, whereas truly a birth certificate is a گواهي ولادت (Certificate of Live Birth) that is handed out to the parents of a neonate who has just been born on the strength of and pursuant to which a birth certificate is issued upon parental request. گواهي ولادت is normally issued by the hospital at which the baby was delivered, or sometimes by a private doctor if delivery was made at home, and includes such information as the full names of the parents of the neonate, the date and hour and minute of delivery, the sex of the neonate, the name and signature of the superintending doctor and the seal of the hospital. شناسنامه is issued by (a local department of) Census and Civil Status Registration Authority of Iran on the strength of a گواهي ولادت under seal.
