list – N.B. ليست is a loan word from French liste, from Italian lista, of Germanic origin. The Persian equivalent is فهرست which encompasses every meaning element of list ليست (in addition to index which element is absent in the English list) and which obviates the need for borrowing the English equivalent. In present-day Persian, forms with ليست (as shown in the derivatives below) have been well established but in other contexts, as well as when used discretely, Persian equivalent is preferable to the English.
