in present-day Persian often used as a noun – an unwelcome past occurrence; an injury, loss or harm; a loss incurred; mishap; misfortune; affliction; adversity; mischance – used especially in the phrase جبران مافات and جبران مافات كردن (NOTE : This is the established form in Persian, and while جبران and جبران كردن may take various nouns as their object the established object in the above form is مافات and the form does not admit a second or an alternative object. If, therefore, the speaker wishes to mention the kind or type of the loss or damage incurred he will use جبران not with مافات but with a noun or noun phrase that describes the type or nature of that loss.
