pl: مذاهب – a religious faith closely connected to and being a denomination of another source religion, the latter in Persian designated دين the two never being interchangeable unless in non-technical routine conversations by less educated or less careful speakers. Some good examples by way of illustration would be دين اسلام (Islam, the Islamic faith) : مذهب تشيع (shi’ism) and مذاهب اسلامي (Islamic sects, Islamic faiths), دين مسيح (Christianity), مذاهب مسيحيت Christian faiths ● religious cult (Persian never said of conspicuously pervert forms of a religion, and less so of man-made quasi-religions or cults) ● religion; religious faith; religious school – See the following note. N.B. In Persian, both مذهب and دين have well-defined semantic borders, and taken in their strict sense are not interchangeable. Despite that, however, مذهب is sometimes erroneously used as a synonym for دين – though the opposite almost never happens to be the case. The more educated and knowledgeable speakers often make sure not to make this blunder, and the two should never be confused either in conversation or in print. In translating into English, however, equivalents for مذهب are not adequate in that they are either wider than, or tend to derogate from, Persian and fall short of the subtle distinction between the two Persian words, and Persian مذهب is therefore frequently translated ‘religion’ or ‘faith’ or ‘religious faith’ all of which are devoid of the distinctive features of مذهب that make it stand out from دين)
