• appellee • respondent (in an appellate jurisdiction) : “[in the U.K. appeal is] a complaint to a superior court of an injustice done by an inferior one. The party complaining is styled the appellant, the other party the respondent. In civil cases, appeals from the county court, from the Chancery, Queen’s Bench, the Probate, Divorces and Admiralty Divisions of the High Court, lie to the Court of Appeal; from the Court of Appeal, to the House of Lords. – JBS.” In the United States, and in equity practice, the party who makes an answer to a bill or other proceeding is styled ‘Respondent’. In appellate practice, the party who contends against an appeal is the ‘respondent’; and the party against whom the appeal is taken is styled ‘the appellee’. In the civil law, one who answers or is security for another; a fidejussor. HCB. “In the U.K. ‘Co-respondent’ is properly any person made respondent to, or called upon to answer, a petition, or other proceeding, jointly with another. The word is now applied almost exclusively to a person charged by a husband, suing for a divorce, with adultery with the wife, and made, jointly with her, a respondent to the suit. – JBS”
