The second active listening skill is the ability to pay attention to both the content and the related emotions contained in what another is communicating This is what Daniel Goleman has called "emotional intelligence" and I have referred to as "social quotient."2 At first blush, this seems simple, but for those who practice active listening, figuring out quickly what a person is saying while simultaneously paying attention to the feelings surrounding that content is quite a challenge.
Focusing also on the Emotional Quotient (EQ) and notjust on the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) became the norm in organizational interviews.
