Regarding the environment, anthropologists make a distinction between the 'planet' which is shaped by natural forces and the 'world' which is built by human effort (Csikszentmihalyi and Rochberg/Halton 1981).
American Anthropologist, 66(3), 171-200.
Erikson's (1950) spatial analyses have been criticized by anthropologists who offer other psychoanalytic interpretations of bodily spaces (Pandolfo, 1989).
The majority of anthropologists emphasize the intrinsically social and cultural character of the human body.
Many anthropologists use metaphor analysis to interpret the ways the human body is linked to myths and cosmology and describe how spatial and temporal processes are encoded with body symbolism (Hugh-Jones, 1979; Johnson, 1988).

Then someone suggested to Bob Popp that he talk to an anthropologist named Montgomery McFate.
For the Department of Defense, it was a tall order to locate anthropologists willing to work for the Pentagon.
Not only was McFate rare for an anthropologist, but also she was enthusiastic about the war effort.
The Pentagon moved forward with DARPA's idea to bring anthropologists into the Iraq war, and McFate garnered exclusive permission to interview Marines coming home from Iraq.
As an anthropologist, McFate believed that "the tribal insurgency is a direct result of our misunderstanding the Iraqi culture."

For anthropologists to explore the lived experience of individuals affected by the modern nation state, they must study nuances of authority, violence and control that effect the range of political action possible in most cases.
Kafka has brilliantly illustrated, in a way that can be very helpful to anthropologists of the state, how atomized interactions with the state frustrate all attempts to influence it or view it as coherent, rendering these interactions experientially absurd and forming in those it governs an alienated consciousness.
The distortion of time and space in Kafka's portrayal of the state can also contribute to social scientists' dialectical approach to the difficulties encountered by anthropologists in conceiving of the state in one location or behind the actions of a person fulfilling their employment.
While anthropologists are unable to make informed judgments about the actual functioning of the state from ethnographic accounts of its subjects, they can discover the forms in which the state manifests its authority.
For K. when his direct investigation of the state, in both The Castle and The Trial, seems impossible, he enters into relationships with the local population and people only marginally connected to the state, in an effort to seek the underlying logic through the culturally influenced perspective of the individuals he can have access to, similar to an anthropologist who indirectly studies the subjects of the state rather then state officials.
