These five bones, along with the talus and calcaneus form the tarsus - a cluster of seven articulating bones within the foot.
The hindfoot is comprised of the of the ankle bone (talus) and heel bone (calcaneus).
The calcaneus is the largest, weight bearing bone in the foot and connected to the talus at the subtalar joint and is cushioned underneath by a layer of fat.
It articulates with the calcaneus below it and the navicular in front of it within the talocalcaneonavicular joint, transmitting the entire weight of the body to the foot.
The subtalar joint is the articulation between the talus and the calcaneus, and the inferior tibiofibular joint, the articulation between the tibia and the fibula.
