In this sense, liposomes made of different phospholipids, polystyrene, dendrimers, or polylactic-polyglycolic acid have been used as drug delivery systems because they are biocompatible and biodegradable and they can encapsulate different drugs.
An imaginative approach to control the number of drug molecules adsorbed and, what is more important, the release kinetics of these drug molecules, is the covalent grafting onto the surface of mesoporous matrices of dendrimers, which are highly branched monodisperse macromolecules that might present many different function- alities.
However, the use of different generations (first, second, and third) of poly(propyleneimine) dendrimers allows for having many more amine groups (4, 8, and 16 primary amine groups on their periphery, respectively) at the inner part of the mesopores readily available to attract drug molecules than con- ventional amine-silane grafting, as can be observed in Figure 2.18.
These different generations of amine dendrimers can be easily grafted to the surface of the channels of SBA-15 through the introduction of alkosysilanes into the dendrimers' structure (Gonzalez et al. 2009).
