Are there not discursive conditions for the articulation of any "we"? Whether by interpellation, in Althusser's sense, or by discursive pro- ductivity, in Foucault's, the subject is initiated through a pri- mary submission to power. Alt- husser's doctrine of interpellation clearly sets the stage for Foucault's later views on the "discursive production of the subject." In the exchange by which that recognition is proferred and accepted, interpellation-the discursive production of the social subject-takes place.
