Hydra: Stem Cell-Mediated Regeneration, Morphallaxis, and Epimorphosis

Work from many labs has shown that heart regeneration in the adult zebrafish is carried out primarily through the dedifferentiation of preexisting cardiomyocytes (epimorphosis), establishment of a blastema at the wound site through local proliferation and migration, and, finally, redifferentiation of blastema cells to repair the heart (Curado and Stainier 2006; Lepilina et al. 2006; Kikuchi et al, 2010; Zhang et al. 2013).
