Cuticle: Thin layer of colorless dead tissue between the eponychium and the nail plate, forming a seal to keep pathogens from infecting the matrix area.
Cuticle area: Portion of the nail plate located along the eponychium.
Eponychium: The area of living skin that borders the base of the nail plate, protecting the MATRIX.
Lunula: A bluish white, opaque area that is visible through the nail plate along the eponychium.
Matrix: A small area of living tissue directly below the eponychium where nail cells are created, and the nail plate is produced.
