If the silica matrix is not previously functional- ized with certain groups, it is not able to uptake any tryptophan into the mesopores due to the hydrophobic nature of this amino acid.
However, an organic modification of the silica walls of SBA-15 with quaternary alkyl amines (Figure 2.13) changes the hydrophobicity of the carrier surface, which promotes the tryptophan adsorption into the mesopores.
The increase of the amino acid adsorption is explained by the strong interactions that take place between the hydrophobic alkyl chains and the indole group from the tryptophan.
In fact, almost two-thirds of the silica surface area functionalized, which radically changes the hydrophobic character of the carrier and hence increases the amino acid adsorption into the mesopores.
