"Whether a relationship [spanning a structural hole] is strong or weak," Burt wrote in his seminal book, "it generates information benefits when it is a bridge over a structural hole."22 Bridges, in other words, are ideally positioned to carry valuable information across clusters-and as Burt's research has shown, to profit from playing this bridging role.23 Excellent networkers seem to understand this intuitively; for example, Reid Hoffman, the Linkedln founder who is also known for his off-line networking skills, offers this piece of advice: "Introduce two people who do not know each other but ought to."24 Doing this requires that you think about the people you know with an eye to how you can help them.
Burt's findings have led him to conclusions quite different from many people's intuitions about how networking works.
Burt's research, though, does answer such questions, and shows that many people's intuitions about networking are wrong.
This is wisdom Nozad seemed to have intuited all along.
