The dominant neoclassical methodology has proved very useful in the study of culture: it is based on a clear behavioral model, which helps to capture the demand and supply of art.
Because of its demonstrable usefulness, most art economists stick closely to the traditional neoclassical method of analysis.
However, I wish to argue that it may often be useful to go even further, beyond the existing limits of the neoclassical approach.
The conventional analysis of culture essentially using basic neoclassical methods has greatly enriched our knowledge of the social aspects of the arts, and in particular the relationship between the monetary and artistic realms.

We propose that the roots of the beliefs and assumptions that underpin the existing paradigm are these interrelated strands of influence: Neoclassical economics, evolutionary theory (the selfish gene) and functionalist sociology.

- Essential modes of influence addresses how neoclassical economics becomes operative in organizational life and focuses on two theo- ries held with religious-like zeal: Agency and Transaction Cost.
The economic man of biology is the result of the conception of the selfish gene and conforms comfortably with economic man of neoclassical economics.
