The purposes of Idess embassy was to investigate Qing government intentions concerning territorial affairs unsettled by the Treaty of Nerchinsk, analyze the Chinese market, study the activities of foreign merchants in China, seek out potential opportuni- ties to sell Russian goods, acquire permission for an Orthodox establishment, negotiate the release of all Russian prisoners in the Chinese empire, and inspectthe Heirung River Basin.
Accompanied by about four hundred attendants and their caravans, he left Moscow in March 1692, arriving in Beijing in November 1693, through Tobolsk, Lake Baikal, Nerchinsk, Argun River, and Zhangjiakou.
