The problem of the relationship between omnipotence and decentring has been especially important in the light of such research, primarily as the dangers of omnipotence and omniscience are increasingly seen as relevant to discussions concerning democracy, justice, autonomy, nationalism, ideology and globalization.
However, as Jessica Benjamin notes, 'Habermas provided an entry into intersubjectivity, but without sufficient attention to the subject's destructive omnipotence.'11 Benjamin's approach to rethinking intersubjectivity, which I rely on in various parts of this book, stresses that the subject is inter- subjectively constituted within the social and cultural environment in which the individual is embedded, while simultaneously granting due recognition to intrapsychic processes of identification and projection.
