The active agent is oseltamivir acid, which also shows very high in vitro inhibitory efficacy toward the enzyme but low oral bioavail- ability due to its high polarity.
To circumvent this problem, it is marketed as its ethyl ester prodrug (oseltamivir), which undergoes rapid enzymatic hydrolysis and produces high and sustained plasma levels of the active agent.
