Through sociolinguistic analysis I point out the life story narrator's choices in how she or he narrates and makes these choices available for close analysis.
Teaching inside a maximum security prison starting in 1984 led to my collection of sociolinguistic interviews of over one hundred narratives of crime from nineteen inmates.
Sociolinguistic analysis opens the narrative from a simple topic-centered story to a closer look at how that story is told, how the story is positioned in the individual's life and in ever-expanding circles of community and power.
My sociolinguistic addition to narrative criminology comes through sharing how discourse management can be readily ascertained by nonlinguists to explore how a speaker presents the self in what I think of as "telling moments"-where the speaker presents what matters in the tension-filled and chaotic worlds demonstrated in autobiographical narrative of those in prison and those grappling with addiction.
