I became aware after a further silence that he was not in fact being silent-he was stammering.
Of course, I thought, I should have realized that; he had told me he had a stammer which sometimes became so intense that for a period he could not say anything.
He agreed verbally but as if the 'stammer' continued; as nearly as I can represent it he breathed out sharply 'Hah, hah, just. . . hah... a problem . . . hah.
I said he seemed to be making both a sarcastic comment on what was taking place-his 'stammer' and my interpretation.
This was almost at once followed by astonishment that apparently he could not talk-that his stammer was so severe, I felt no wiser and no nearer to thinking of any interpretation which was likely to have the effect which I had always understood good interpretations to have.
