Suboptimization is usually applied to complex thermal systems, particularly when the optimization of the entire system may not be feasible owing to complexity.
Suboptimization is the optimization of one part of a problem or of a subsystem, ignoring some variables that affect the ob- jective function or other subsystems.
Suboptimization is useful when neither the problem formulation nor the available optimization techniques allow a solution to the entire problem.
