Different experiments and experiences indicate that a doubling of CO2 would increase stomatal resistance and reduce the rate of transpiration (the passage of water vapor from plants) by about 50% on average (S¸aylan, 2000).
Accordingly, any decrease in transpiration tends to increase runoff.
On the other hand, CO2 also causes an increase in plant growth, leading to a larger area of transpiration.
Addi- tionally, potential increase in leaf temperatures is caused by reduced transpiration rates, and species changes in vegetation communities offset increases in plant water-use efficiency associated within a CO2-enriched atmosphere.
