Chalcanthite, which effloresces at 33% RH, would not be considered efflorescent by observers in tropical areas, but it would be considered efflorescent by observers in arid areas.
The bonattite, CuS04* 3H20, that results from the efflorescence of chalcanthite, CUS04*5H20, is so loosely aggregated that it is incapable of retaining even the original shape of the chalcanthite, and will fell into a formless mass of powder as the transformation approaches completion.
The earliest stage of physical disintegration of the bonattite that results from the efflorescence of chalcanthite is apparent in the development of shrinkage fractures, as shown in Plate 3,4.
