The dorsal interosseous muscles are bipennate - like a feather that's barbed on both sides of the quill - each muscle has two heads and origin points on the two adjacent metacarpal bones, with the insertion points being the base of its proximal phalange and into the extensor expansion of the corresponding extensor digitorum tendon.
The extensor expansion is the special connective attachments that enable the extensor tendons to insert into the phalanges.
It's inserted on the radial side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the index finger and the extensor expansion.
It's inserted into the radial side of the proximal phalanx of the middle finger and the extensor expansion.
It's inserted on the ulnar side of the proximal phalanx of the middle finger and the extensor expansion.
