Strategies under investigation to manip- ulate macrophage behavior in regenerative medicine can be grossly divided into four categories: those that administer exogenously activat- ed macrophages, those that aim to increase or decrease macrophage numbers, those that employ local or systemic delivery of bioactive fac- tors to alter the phenotype of the macrophages that accumulate follow- ing injury, and those that modulate macrophage phenotype through the design of immunomodulatory biomaterial implants (Fig. 2; Table 1).
Immunomodulatory Biomaterials
Immunomodulatory materials are being developed with the goal of limiting negative reactions to implants and instead, promoting their integration into the body
General approaches when designing immunomodulatory materials include (1) carefully selecting physical properties, (2) altering chemistry, (3) incorporating therapeutic molecules for controlled release and, (4) combination with cell therapies.
This can be optimized by intentional selection of material properties to achieve successful immunomodulatory biomaterials.
